Dancing is immediate. It happens in infinitely small blips of the present, strung together one into the next, direct and spontaneous. And as each moment fades out of the present and into the past, these blips coalesce and ferment and refract into memory. That tension between the immediate and the remembered is the animating force behind Play — the debut album from Spinbeat, the production alias of Sam Hall, also known as ghost orchard. Where ghost orchard brought glitch-inflected bedroom pop to Orchid Tapes and Winspear, Spinbeat marks a turn towards rawer sounds and something like the dancefloor.
Eight tracks that linger in the space between music for dancing and music for listening — the memory of a dancefloor, sounds and feelings and moments of darkness and colour rendered with a lightness and warmth that sets the record apart from other recent music in the dubby post-club zone. Fragile, intimate moments come bubbling up from underneath the surface, glimmering in plain view for a moment before sinking back into the fog, pockets of earnestness lending depth and substance to the murkier stretches.
