Arc Angel is Luke Slater's most melodic and atmospheric PAS record to date — and a significant departure. Where The Messenger and Temporary Suspension pursued purist, club-functional techno with minimal concession to anything outside the dancefloor, Arc Angel opens that framework up considerably, bringing in shimmering synth work, cosmic atmosphere and a sense of emotional expansiveness that marks a new chapter for the project.
The album opens with the title track as its emotional centrepiece — Arc Angel itself a track of genuine beauty, melodic and luminous in a way that sits in sharp contrast to the relentless rhythmic focus of earlier P.A.S. records. Wraith and Sable Delta establish the atmospheric territory early, while The Periphery and Slab City retain the project's harder, more functional edge without sacrificing the new melodic sensibility. Mind Minus and Sun Rider push the synthesis between atmosphere and dancefloor momentum to its most fully realised form, while the closing sequence — Distant Moons, Sleeping Dragons and Escape Through The Iris — brings the album to a close with the kind of cosmic, unhurried sweep that only comes from a producer operating at the peak of their powers. Slater's most complete and fully realised P.A.S. statement to date.
