Dub techno continues to evolve, and Sheffield imprint Short Span has quickly positioned itself at the deeper end of the spectrum. Founded by Matthew Kent and dedicated to long-form, dubbed-out and ambient-inspired tracks, the label blends classic influences with a spacious, modern edge.
Its latest release comes from Denmark’s Picture (Natal Zaks) with Eeeeeeee — a hypnotic fusion of minimal techno, blown-out ambience and cavernous low-end pressure. Across the record, strobing keys, submerged percussion and weighty basslines create a tense but immersive atmosphere.
Opening cut “Waaaaaaaa” introduces a mutated, driving rhythm that feels club-adjacent yet equally powerful on headphones. “Keeeeeee” leans dystopian and otherworldly, while “Heeeeeeee” and “Qeeeeeeee” drift further into eerie, spacious terrain without losing momentum.
Deep, dubbed-out and subtly experimental, Eeeeeeee balances unease and immersion in equal measure. A strong statement from Picture and another standout release from Short Span.
