French producer MMYYLO has built his name on gloomy, slow-burning techno with a dark new-wave streak — analogue synths, guitar and ghostly vocals layered together into a sound that is immediately recognisable and entirely his own. Queenside Knight is the 26th release on Minimood, the German underground label known for its focus on deep, immersive techno, and it is a natural pairing: both artist and label sound fully at home with each other here.
Six carefully crafted tracks of hypnotic rhythms, hazy atmospheres and dark, wide-open space, the chess-themed titles mapping a conceptual arc across the record without ever feeling forced. Call of the Pawns opens proceedings with the slow-burning, hardware-driven energy that defines MMYYLO’s approach before the record moves through Here Come the Knights, Black Queen and Mad Rooks with the patient, moody conviction that has earned him a loyal following and a presence in DJ sets and playlists around the world. Short Castling and Escape of the King close the record with the kind of dark, atmospheric weight that lingers well after the needle lifts. A record that rewards both the dancefloor and the deep listen.
