Miles — of Demdike Stare, Pendle Coven and considerably more — presents Vault on Short Span: six recordings selected from thirty years of warm-up jams that precede each of his solo recording sessions. Never intended as serious statements, these are moments of naive enjoyment — time and space captured as practice, the unconscious element to the conscious process. Mastered by Miles, cut by Rashad Becker. Art by Lucas Dupuy.
The framework is dub techno, and Miles traces his relationship to it with characteristic directness — from a first recording in 1996 attempting to recreate Phylyps Trak with only a Korg X3 and a borrowed Ibanez PUE5, through the watershed realisation that the genius of Basic Channel is akin to the genius of peasant food: using every ingredient with nothing left to waste, including the working noise of the machines themselves. Push the mixer into the red. Amp the noise up from the tape delay because it sounds sick. Spam the send knob into the delay units now, now and now. Carelessness as method. The jams on Vault carry that ethos throughout — warm, rough, alive with the kind of positive mistakes that only happen when the objective is enjoyment rather than perfection. Record everything, because some years later it may well fit, or become relevant in a way you never intended.
