Twenty-five years after its original release, Markus Guentner's debut album In Moll returns in a special anniversary edition on Black Knoll Editions — newly remastered in full analogue by label boss Rafael Anton Irisarri and paired with a newly reworked interpretation by Guentner himself, revisiting the material through the lens of a quarter-century of artistic development. Released in 2001 during the formative years of Kompakt's Pop Ambient series, In Moll arrived as an immediate statement of a distinctive artistic voice. Michael Mayer recalls wandering through Cologne late into the night with Wolfgang Voigt, replaying a demo CDR for hours — "we knew that we had found something outrageously beautiful and we wanted the whole world to listen."
What Guentner achieved across seven compositions was a series of dreamlike landscapes that feel simultaneously familiar and strangely other — bells, hisses, distant textures and slow-moving bass tones drifting through vast expanses of atmosphere while luminous synthesizer washes blur the horizon in a fine digital mist. Every gesture deliberate, every texture carefully placed, the album balancing warmth and melancholy with a compositional discipline that rewards both close listening and complete surrender. For Rafael Anton Irisarri, encountering In Moll shortly after its release in 2001 opened a door to a world of music he didn't know existed — "The Sight Below would not have existed without In Moll paving the way."
