funkshn's third album is the record Aleksei Surkov has been building toward all along. The UK-based Russian producer has spent the years since his debut hoarding his most potent productions for a more definitive statement — drawing on D&B, jungle, dubstep and IDM on Калькулэйтид Тантрум, then confronting the grim reality of death through footwork, deconstructed club and hypnotic dub techno on Флюгер. CONTACT arrives as the synthesis of all of it: impishly innovative, endlessly restless and leaving no stone unturned.
The electrifying sato leads the way — glitchy Ed Banger-style French touch house fused with fractal jungle and noisy, cybernetic interference, a transmission from the far future that sounds like nothing else currently circulating. CONTACT rips out footwork's endoskeleton and electroplates it with smeared digital effects and distorted hardstyle kicks. VULTURES picks at the scraps left by EDM, smashing sawtooth synths with woody syncopated drums and haunting the wreckage with the ghosts of speed garage. PAT imagines East Coast club fused with nihilistic dungeon techno. Taken as a whole, the eleven tracks plot a course through hazardous new territory — channelling the memories of terrestrial sounds into a suite of hybridised, pneumatic club experiments that endlessly search for the dancefloor's El Dorado.
