For those familiar with Barker's unconventional and uncompromising take on techno, Utility feels something like the main event. Following the sterling Debiasing EP, Sam Barker's debut album on Ostgut Ton doesn't simply step away from the pack — it fosters an Elysian colony on a new world, populating it with wondrously enigmatic music that shuns industrial stereotypes and eludes categorisation entirely. Back on wax for 2026 and sounding as singular as ever.
Rhythms shape themselves into auditory Fibonacci spirals and kaleidoscopic fragments, riding not on intrusive kick drums and feigned energy but on naturally propulsive musical arrangement — every pound of energy matched by an equal countermeasure of peace, every ambient passage carrying a patient energy that seems to require just a slight push to ignite. The track titles offer their own clues: Paradise Engineering, Experience Machines, Gradients Of Bliss, Hedonic Treadmill, Models Of Wellbeing — a mirror held to the world of clubbing, painting a hedonistic landscape ruled by machines piping celestial music into cavernous rooms of endlessly replenishing ravers. Experience Machines glimmers with hyperactive, four-dimensional joy ride energy; Gradients Of Bliss summons deep and cavernous echoes. An evolved hybrid, a higher being — and perhaps a metaphoric recreation of the memory of a perfect night.
