The penultimate edition of the Earquake vinyl series finds Voigt in an expansive, experimentally inclined mood — operating as W.V. and All across four sides that constitute the most internally coherent and conceptually ambitious entry in the sequence. Where earlier editions documented a restless plurality of aliases and styles, Profan 48 turns inward, folding the catalogue back on itself and examining its own materials with the detached curiosity of a scientist revisiting old specimens.
The Diskoschleifen 2000 sequence opens the record: abstracted disco loops stripped of sentiment and saved from themselves through sheer structural deconstruction, the source material rendered almost unrecognisable but never entirely erased. Galoppmusik bends the straight bass drum — the governing principle of the entire Profan project — into something approaching a gallop, the rigidity that defined so much of the catalogue briefly and mischievously subverted. Three variations on Babel explore the same material from different angles across the B side, each one a distinct resolution to the same set of problems. The All alias closes the record with remixes of Tamastar, Diskoschleifen 2000 and Intoleratio — threads running back through the entire catalogue, the series arriving at something close to self-portrait.
