After the forensic narrowing of Earquake 1996, the 1997 edition opens the frame back out — and the range on display across four sides is characteristic of Voigt's output in this period: a structured refusal to settle, a mind that had earned the right to move in any direction it chose. This is one of the more sonically diverse entries in the Earquake series, and one of the more rewarding.
Saw-wave Mike Ink techno sits alongside the eleven-minute ambient sprawl of W.V.'s Gabber Ambient — a title that functions almost as a provocation, the music itself unhurried and atmospheric in a way the name does nothing to suggest. The three previously vinyl-unreleased versions of Wassermann's Fackeln Im Sturm occupy the entire C side, each one a distinct angle on a track that became one of the more unexpected sing-along moments in Cologne's club history, its unlikely communal energy preserved here across three versions for the first time. M:I:5's Maßstab 1:5 contributions close the record by pulling everything back to arid, grid-like minimalism — the restlessness contained, if only briefly, within the strictest possible framework. Essential archive documentation from a producer who remained, to the end of this period, entirely unpredictable.
