Part of Kompakt's ongoing vinyl reissue series drawing from Wolfgang Voigt's decade-spanning Profan archive, Earquake 1993 collects some of the label's earliest and most sought-after material into a single, essential document. A snapshot of a Cologne scene still working out its own rules — restless, irreverent and operating at the intersection of acid, gabber-adjacent brutalism and a deeply strange pop sensibility that belonged entirely to its moment.
The record opens with Mike Ink & The Chain Of Brotherhood's Lovely Ugly Brutal World — a statement of intent that sets the tone for everything that follows — before pivoting through the disorienting charm of Love Inc.'s The Universe and Gymnopedie and Vinyl Countdown's sprawling acid opera Animal Republic. Mike Ink dominates the second half: the bleakly titled 5 Years On Acid, the deadpan provocation of Jingle Bells and the bittersweet evergreen Trump Tower, each one a distinct angle on a scene that would go on to reshape European electronic music entirely. Long out of print, limited edition and essential for any serious archive collection.
