When Dial Records started in 2000 with a bunch of friends inspired by deep house, Detroit techno and Cologne lovetunes, nobody involved ever thought they were running a record label. That was the whole point. David Lieske, Peter Kersten and Paul Kominek had one concept: never to be part of any proper record business, never to be controlled by rule or trend, always to let the label remain a part of their love for music and art. A decade on, Dial 2010 is a document of what that ethos produced — and the enthusiastic feeling it generates still insists: this is only the beginning.
Twelve tracks from the Dial family across its full spectrum — Phantom Ghost, John Roberts, Efdemin, Lawrence, Kassian Troyer, Isolée, Rndm, Christian Naujoks, Pigon, Pantha Du Prince, Carsten Jost and Dominique gathered across a single compilation that moves from contemporary classic and deep house through ambient, drone and minimal techno without ever losing its thread. Almost seventy percent of the artists here appeared on the label's first compilation — the family remaining small, the mountain climbed quietly, the music still at the centre of everything. Carsten Jost's nearly nine-minute Days Gone By and Isolée's Black Lodge alone would justify the existence of the record. As a whole it is one of the great label compilations of its era.
