Dial welcomes a new member to the family with Tom Ruijg's debut long player as Tracey — the Amsterdam-based producer becoming the first Dutch artist to join the Berlin label and marking the 42nd album release on Dial with thirteen tracks of electro, ambient experimentation and warm, tonal techno. A shining light in the Dial discography and one of the label's most distinctive long-form statements.
The track titles — stripped of vowels, compressed into consonant clusters — signal the record's aesthetic from the outset: abstract, slightly alien and resistant to easy categorisation. There is something here that recalls the intricate, emotionally complex machine music of Aphex Twin at his most melodic and mysterious — the same capacity for combining technical precision with genuine warmth and feeling, the same sense of an interior world fully realised and entirely consistent. Electro, ambient and IDM move through the four sides with unhurried logic, warm tonal textures sitting alongside more driving, machine-inflected constructions in a sequence that rewards the full arc as much as individual moments. A debut of genuine distinction.
