Minimood marks its 25th regular release with a double twelve-inch built around a single track and six reworkings of it — a format that invites each remixer to find their own way into the same source material, and the results are as varied and consistently absorbing as the premise deserves. The sleeve is itself a talking point: Milan-based sculptor Tillmann Lauterbach created the artwork using traditional plate-printing methods on travertine stone. The whole package has a warm, wistful feel that echoes the golden age of dub techno while leaning toward quieter kinds of euphoria.
Tobias Oliver’s original Aeon is a pared-back, melancholy techno piece — rolling bassline, punchy synth stabs, a long absorbed and thoughtful mood. The six remixes take it in six distinct directions. Die Wilde Jagd’s Last & First plays out like a strange story, dreamy drones, ripples and chirps drifting into unfamiliar ambient territory. AU Cheek’s Well Well is a murky, minimal take with distorted textures that pull you in slowly. Ray Okpara’s Lost Lovers keeps the rolling bassline and lets the original’s synth lines echo and flutter around it like ghosts. Bluetrain’s Special Edition Dub is classic minimal dub techno with trademark dub effects and a groove that is hard to resist. JS’s Reflective Reshape is blissful dub techno with deep, hazy space and a wash of white noise. Anton Kubikov’s Frail Snowflakes closes on sparse, airy soundscapes carried by a floating acid bassline with robotic whispers overhead. Seven versions, one track, endless depth.
