Soul Riot is a 2015 album by The Lions, a Los Angeles-based collective known for blending reggae, soul, and funk influences. Released on Stones Throw Records, the album features a fusion of classic reggae rhythms with soulful melodies, reflecting the band's diverse musical backgrounds.
Formed in 2007, The Lions comprise seasoned musicians from the LA music scene, including members of the ska band Hepcat—Deston Berry and Alex Désert—as well as vocalist Malik "The Freq" Moore and DJ/toaster Black Shakespeare, cousin of reggae legend Robbie Shakespeare. The ensemble also includes guitarist Dan Ubick (formerly of Breakestra), bassist Dave Wilder (a collaborator with Macy Gray), and other artists who have worked with De La Soul, Barrington Levy, Beck, and Raphael Saadiq.
Soul Riot draws inspiration from late '60s and early '70s reggae, incorporating elements of ska, rocksteady, and soul. The album addresses contemporary social issues while maintaining an upbeat and danceable vibe. Producer Dan Ubick described the project as an effort to "speak to people's emotions and frustrations while also giving them a chance to dance and release some stress."
