Rob Clouth returns to Max Cooper’s Mesh with Cicada, a vibrant new EP that follows earlier releases on the label and continues his ever-curious push into the outer limits of club-minded electronic music.
Known for building a dialogue between scientific phenomena and big-system sonics, Clouth’s recent output has also embraced a more playful, free-running creative energy — prioritising instinct, experimentation and enjoyment over rigid concepts. That spirit was already apparent on Bichillo and in his recent collaboration with Cooper, 8 Billion Realities, and here it blooms into some of the most dynamic and fun music he’s made to date.
The EP opener Cicada arrives like a swarm: cross-rhythmic glitch layers flicker and multiply before huge bass swells rise into a maximal, trance-leaning crescendo, punctuated by chopped vocals. Core shifts into something more cinematic — a quietly dramatic, machinist symphony of textures, like computers singing in harmony. Gummy Clusters leans into skewed 2-step energy, dissolving into a haze of distorted voices, acoustic rhythms and warped club pressure. Closer Grefuser goes full throttle, unleashing a high-BPM storm of pointillist drums and melancholic synth leads.
