Luke Slater's Planetary Assault Systems project had been active for fifteen years by the time The Messenger arrived on Ostgut Ton — and the album is exactly what that accumulated experience produces when applied with complete dedication to the goal of creating sounds not otherwise present in club music. Following Temporary Suspension's reinstatement of the classic P.A.S. sound, The Messenger pushes further into the territory of sound exploration and discovery that has always been the project's true purpose.
The beautiful introduction track Railer (Further Exploration) floats through the bubbling ether before leading into the mysterious depths of Beauty In The Fear — the sense of timing only possible from a musician and DJ of Slater's experience already fully evident. Play-tested with care and edited to ensure every track fits its intended context, the album moves through highly playable works of club-intended sound art with a disciplined logic: early heavy moments like Bell Blocker and the playful Wriss give way to the magnetic pulse of Kray Squid, the drum barrage of Rip The Cut — perhaps the album's most rhythmically intense moment — before the rolling, filtering tones of Cold Bolster and Black Tea urge the listener further into perfectly frenetic territory. Each track has its own voice; none feels less pure than the last. A great tribute to all true explorers, chasing what Slater describes as the fundamental wave.
