Crossing Paths / R-Type finds Mark E at a pivotal moment — his journey away from disco-tinged house gathering pace toward what seems its natural conclusion: melodic, rolling techno. Two tracks that sit at the edge of one sound world and the beginning of another, each one a distinct and compelling argument for the direction the music is heading.
Crossing Paths opens with pinging kicks and a tumbling Octave One-style arp riff that sounds like some digital steel band, eventually settling into a pummelling hi-hat rhythm that locks in and refuses to let go. The flip belongs to R-Type — a more glowering presence entirely. Unfurling across nine minutes, it moves through a juddering digital drone and choppy rotor blade synths before something akin to a rockabilly bassline enters alongside a ghostly analogue phrase. The combination is rather odd, and all the more compelling for it. A snapshot of a producer in productive transition, pushing at the edges of what deep house can be.
