Originally released digitally in 2018, Khotin's Beautiful You arrives on vinyl for the first time via Ghostly International — pressed on limited edition red transparent wax and finally given the physical form this deeply personal record has always deserved. In a world of relentless noise, it stands quietly to one side and watches, valorising the quiet gesture, reminding us that sometimes one word is enough.
The album carries the weight of a specific family history — the cover image depicting Khotin's mother and grandparents during their time as Russian refugees, that sense of nostalgic displacement and longing permeating every warm, unhurried moment. Melodic lines develop organically in natural, unfussy forms — synth washes, found sound, birdsong and room tone grounding the listener before lifting them into the fragile liminal space of memory. Water Soaked In Forever, Vacation and Welcome each hold the listener suspended in beauty without ever demanding anything in return, the whole record smiling and looking up at the sun rather than dragging its heels. Music that invokes an imagined sense of place, made by someone who clearly needed to make it — and that a computer-generated voice at the close of Welcome says "beautiful you, thanks for the smile" feels, somehow, entirely right.
