K Wata's debut album arrives on Short Span carrying a double meaning embedded in its title. Give U Space is the kind of thing you might say at the end of a tense moment — a small diplomatic appeal — and the record carries that sensibility throughout, consistently riding an uncompromising moodiness in which emotional pressure is felt rather than announced. Zone 2 cardio for your emotions: never beating you to exhaustion, but slowly edging out the subtle details of feeling.
The BPM floats in the high 120s and upward into the low 140s, drawing on bass music, UK dubstep and styles that occupy those registers — yet K Wata is not afraid to space things out entirely, abandoning club-style energy in favour of heady, contemporary movement and the plot that happens between the percussion. The beats alone are fascinating: rarely saying the same thing from one bar to the next, often composed of industrial-grade materials, the air between them where the music truly slips and slinks.
On Radio Embrace, kit and dubby elements blur together; on There Will Be Love, the most expansive piece, an imagined world is rendered with careful, considered construction that makes the music feel genuinely life-like. Vocals from SG, clarinet from Eugene Lai, mixed with Christopher Botta at Fer Sound Studio. Art by Sharon Gong, whose snakes in the artwork echo the music's own slipping, slinky motion. Mastered and cut by Mike Grinser at Manmade.
