Jacob Dwyer and Sam Purcell join forces on Blank Mind with Suitcase In The Water — a critically devised, oddball satisfier woven together on a long-haul Covid hangover, densely emotive and impossible to easily categorise. Pick up the record and a plain white sleeve greets you with stickers placed as if without serious intent — a murky motorway interchange, a Samsonite logo, a human head in orange — its purposefully bleak appearance adding sincere allure to titles like Helmet In The Water, Stick On Ice and 6AM (Sunday 24th January), loose timestamps recorded on a whim.
Plunge in with headphones and the brain stirs with great detail — a Hitchcock-like murder mystery grotesque, core melancholia, terrifying as it goes, a delirious calm waiting at the end like an unexpected aftertaste on the tongue. Epiphanic narratives in spoken word style sit atop dark ambient field recordings, sensitive synths and large rolls of rave-focused drums layered over provocatively soothing basslines, grief clothed gently with the underscores of UK rave.
