Georgian-born, Berlin-based producer Irakli — one half of I/Y and a founding figure behind the Staub party and white label series — releases his debut album on Dial, a label whose headsier, more introspective corner of the electronic music spectrum feels like a natural fit. While Irakli can certainly bang it out with the best of them, his work has always occupied the more psychedelic, deeper and spacier side of the techno continuum — more open air than dark room, more Donato than Marcel. Major Signals takes that sensibility further from the dancefloor than ever before, and the results are quietly extraordinary.
Eleven tracks explore slower rhythms and the more twisted modulations of his hardware across four sides. Blessing From The Future carries the slo-mo drug chug that, pitched up, would work perfectly in a set by someone like Lena Willikens. This Way transforms a piano loop into something far more sinister — a player piano treated to The Disintegration Loops method, the comical bounce becoming deeply unsettling. Ambient tracks alternate between the melancholic Forever and the paranoid Black Windows, the range and skill on display confirming this is not a producer merely experimenting with non-traditional dance structures, but one who has studied the vast possibilities that come from thinking genuinely outside of the box. Just like Soela's Genuine Silk, Dial slips tiny gems like this under the radar. Not to be missed.
