There is something genuinely rare about a record that constructs an entirely convincing world from the sounds of tables, railings, glass and metal. Architectonics — the new album from Kirill Vasin recording as Hoavi on Peak Oil — does exactly that. Developed over several years and captured via phone and contact microphone, the record builds its entire sonic vocabulary from self-recorded percussive textures, transforming everyday surfaces into the backbone of something intricate, immersive and deeply considered.
The gamelan influence is felt rather than imitated. Vasin does not reproduce Indonesian traditional forms so much as reframe their methodologies through his own distinct language — rhythmelodic patterns that shimmer between minimalism, ambient, techno and abstract electronica, anchored by cavernous reverb, sub pressure and the cyclical logic of modern minimal composition. The result sits precisely at the intersection of the architectural and the dreamlike: precise in construction, alive in execution, suspended somewhere between ritual, system music and deep introspective listening. A significant step forward, and one of the more quietly extraordinary records of 2026.
