Hashim's Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) is one of the foundational documents of electro — originally released in 1983 and widely regarded as one of the first hip-hop records to use a Roland TR-808 drum machine in the way that would define the sound of an entire generation. This 2005 pressing on ELP presents two distinct versions, the Electromix and the Technomix, each one a distinct angle on one of electronic music's most important and enduring tracks.
The Electromix honours the original's raw, 808-driven energy — the snapping drums and Arabic-inflected synth phrases that made the track so instantly arresting and so immediately influential. The Technomix carries the flip with a harder, more contemporary techno sensibility applied to the same foundational material, the two versions together demonstrating the track's remarkable adaptability across more than two decades of electronic music history.
