Where were you for You? Gold Panda's hypnotic track entered the celestial tape deck just as music blog culture neared its halcyon heights in the spring of 2010 — stuttering across an excited global community of writers and fans with a sound that was genuinely different: pinched and pitched vocal cuts, percussive vinyl-static pops and teary-eyed chord changes that felt both human and foreign, as if the strange interpretation of youthful nostalgia were broadcasting back from some faraway future. Now, as Ghostly celebrates its 25th season, Derwin Dicker's breakthrough debut Lucky Shiner returns in a special fireworks vinyl Obi edition — hard to get on wax for years, now finally and properly back.
Lucky Shiner proved that Gold Panda could stir emotion with modest methods in the full-length format as convincingly as in a single track. From the symphony of twinkling bells and strings on Snow & Taxis to the high-flying melancholia of Marriage, the album shaped a vision of electronic music that tugged at the heart as much as it nodded to the dancefloor — impossibly replayable, endlessly affecting. Dicker himself puts it best: "I had no idea what I was doing, and I still don't... and that's the way I like it." A record that changed his life and, for many, changed how they understood what electronic music could be. Now on fireworks vinyl. Get on with it.
