November 89 is the missing piece — the first chapter of the GAS story, finally available on vinyl for the first time. Comprising some of Wolfgang Voigt's earliest recordings as GAS, some dating back to the late 1980s, the album was originally released in 2008 as a CD insert in the art book Wolfgang Voigt GAS on Raster-Noton. Now, its arrival on Kompakt vinyl effectively completes the existing GAS series, adding the "first" album to a catalogue that has always been understood as one of electronic music's most singular and immersive bodies of work.
These are early precursors — not yet the fully realised Gesamtkunstwerk of Zauberberg and Königsforst, with their hypnotically focused forest imagery and abstract, psychedelic wash of alphorn and bass drum, but already pointing unmistakably in that direction. The dense forest atmosphere is present, the slowly evolving harmonic textures already moving with the patience and depth that would come to define GAS entirely. Cover art makes direct reference to Oktember, its hypnotic forest motif one of the first Waldloops works that have since found their way into international galleries and art venues. Essential for anyone serious about the GAS catalogue — and long overdue.
