The debut release from Finland's Noppa Recordings — a three-tracker split between Clouds and Tes La Rok that captures both producers at a particularly interesting moment in the late-2000s dubstep underground. Underrated on release and still not as widely known as it deserves to be, Shallow in particular is the kind of track that rewards rediscovery.
Clouds' Shallow opens the A-side with a chilled, atmospheric quality that belies the savage bassline running beneath it — uncredited vocals from Joanna Newsom drifting through the production with an ethereal presence that sits unexpectedly but entirely naturally within the dubstep framework. Tes La Rok holds the flip with two distinct cuts: Codeine and Reggae, each one carrying the Finnish producer's own characterful take on the sound. Three tracks, one debut label, plenty of understated quality. Worth seeking out.
