Broadcast’s debut album The Noise Made By People returns on Warp, marrying electronic music’s futurist streak with film noir and classic torch song writing. The Portishead comparisons come easily, given Trish Keenan’s cool, detached vocal and the unhurried, blunted beats. But where that group stared across a chasm toward some unattainable happiness, Broadcast beam their music at you from somewhere in outer space, with far more layers to get lost in. The soft-focus haze is a product of the studio, yet this is unmistakably a band, with a bassist, a guitarist and a real drummer, and an organic, chilling quality that samples and sequences alone could never produce.
The sound is vibrant rather than laboured. Drums arrive as cyclonic washes of patter and noise, guitars chunk along or slide through the background ether, and strings and keyboards evoke the soundtracks to old films as well as those yet to be made. The pop songwriting keeps the experiment honest, and even the most pop-averse listener will find themselves humming along to the melodic hooks of Come On Let’s Go, the single that reached number 82 in the UK chart, and Look Outside. It was also the opening instalment of a near-perfect trio of albums. A record that sounds as alive now as it did at the turn of the millennium.
