Thirteen years is a long time to wait. Since Tomorrow's Harvest arrived in 2013 — itself a record that felt like a transmission from somewhere beyond ordinary time — Boards of Canada have maintained their characteristic silence, the anticipation around any possible return becoming something of its own mythology. Inferno ends that silence, and it does so on its own terms entirely.
Spanning seventy minutes across two LPs, the album draws the threads of the brothers' recent esoteric interests into their most fully realised and darkly atmospheric work to date. The signature Boards of Canada elements are present — those melodies that seem simultaneously familiar and half-remembered, the hazy analogue warmth, the sense of childhood memory refracted through something older and stranger — but Inferno pushes further into the shadows than anything that preceded it.
The darker ambience that defined Tomorrow's Harvest is deepened considerably here, informed by the esoteric territory explored in their 2019 Societas X Tape NTS mix, while an expanded role for speech soundbites adds a disquieting documentary texture to the record's already unsettling emotional landscape. A record that rewards patience, demands attention and sounds like nothing else. Boards of Canada have returned exactly as they left — entirely, unnervingly themselves.
