Sam Barker's solo debut on Ostgut Ton returns for 2026 — and Debiasing remains as provocative and forward-thinking as it was on first release in 2018. Known for his long-running duo Barker & Baumecker and his role as co-founder of Leisure System, Barker had built years of relationship with Berghain and Ostgut Ton before stepping out alone, and this debut solo release reflects both that deep familiarity with the dancefloor and a rigorous desire to question everything it takes for granted.
The EP is the product of a hard look at the musical elements often considered necessary to maintain dancefloor momentum — and a conscious effort to sidestep them entirely. There is no kick, no snare, no clap. What remains is four tracks of morphing synth stabs and pared-down metronomic rhythms in varying time signatures that function, against all logic, as driving, hypnotic and unlikely dancefloor tools. Inspired by the psychology underpinning the relationship between producer, DJ and audience, Debiasing is an exercise in creating alternative paths within a techno framework. As Barker puts it: "you always hit against this problem of an all-encompassing taxonomy and the baggage that comes with it."
