Patrick Gräser returns as Answer Code Request with his first album in eight years — and Halo finds him in a place of unusual creative freedom. A Berghain resident and core member of Ostgut-Ton during the defining years of the 2010s techno resurgence, Gräser helped shape the era's steely, modernist club music with a focused precision that became his signature. Since signing to Delsin in 2022 he has relished the opportunity to explore moods and energies beyond peak time demands, and Halo builds on that premise with an uninhibited collection of tracks that reconnects with the free-spirited nature of his earliest music-making.
Smoky clouds of pads and chords lend the album an introspective quality in the grand tradition of ambient techno, and in front of these haunting melodic forms Gräser moves freely through all manner of rhythmic directions. Fractured, downtempo micro-beats and angular fractals on Fading Shadows and Refraction take their cues from breakbeat — finely detailed drum sequences constantly evolving into new arrangements. A hard-edged nod to D&B surfaces on D-Fracture, a hint of submerged ravey acid courses beneath Sublith, and the firmer kick-anchored pulse of classic Answer Code Request manifests on Halo and Bliphar. Throughout, these tougher tropes are channelled into mesmerising soundscapes that soften the attack without diminishing the potential for club impact. Personal, open and steadily progressive — his finest work to date.
