Twenty-five years on from its original release on Achim Szepanski's Mille Plateaux, Andreas Tilliander's debut album under his own name returns via Keplar in a vinyl reissue with adjusted artwork by Marc Hohmann and updated mastering by Tilliander himself — running the music through an analogue outboard and finding, to his own satisfaction, that he was still happy with how it sounded. Ljud arrived in 2001 a year after the Cliphop album under his Mokira moniker, and where that record established him in the clicks-and-cuts scene, this one deepened the inquiry — just as minimalistic, warm and playful, but notably inspired by house music, built on happy accidents, lively loops and the vivid spontaneity of a producer working in real time.
The record came together through an intuitive process that Tilliander still uses today — making loops, creating bits and pieces, building a personal sound library as foundation. Working primarily with his Nord Modular and the Jeskola Buzz modular studio environment, he would start with a few elements, add more into the mix, then take them out again, arranging in real time while recording. The casualness and vivacity of that improvisational approach is tangible throughout all ten untitled tracks. Released on the label that had just published the seminal Clicks+Cuts compilation, Ljud was a perfect fit for a moment when digital minimalism and analogue warmth were finding a new synthesis. Essential for fans of Chain Reaction, Snd, Jan Jelinek, Akufen and Dettinger.
