8004 returns to Chicago’s dubplate-focused Kino Disk with a six-track release that deepens the project’s shadowy, textural language. Expanding on the ambient leanings of early-2025’s 8001 / 8003, this longer outing unfolds like a storm system — dense fog, electrical hum and submerged rhythm shaping a slow-burning sense of tension and release.
Across the record, dub techno pulses surface and recede while ambience, musique concrète textures and IDM abstraction blur together into a collapsing haze that feels both physical and psychological. Each piece seems carved from the same sonic material but viewed at different depths: 8000 dub delivers a hypnotic, polyrhythmic throb, while 8005 dub channels kinetic dubwise motion somewhere between murky house futurism and classic dub techno pressure. Elsewhere, rhythm becomes suggestion rather than anchor — beats implied rather than stated, atmosphere doing the heavy lifting.
Moments like 8007 hint at dancefloor propulsion without fully committing, while 8002 dub drifts furthest from structure into distant, uneasy space. By the time the closing stretch dissolves into swirling signal and residual pulse, the record feels less like a sequence of tracks and more like a single weather system passing overhead.
A quintessential Kino Disk statement — tactile, ominous and immersive — where dub techno is treated not as genre but as environment, best experienced loud enough that the low-end is felt more than heard.
