Originally released on the iconic Playhouse label in 1997, Mandu and Zuma capture the German producer at the height of his early powers — abstract minimal funk meeting archaic tribal grooves in a slow-burning, off-balance tension that has lost none of its pull in the intervening decades.
Mandu occupies the A-side with the kind of hypnotic, trippy energy that defined the best of the Playhouse aesthetic — restless, organic and deeply physical. Zuma carries the flip with equal conviction, the tribal groove locked in and the funk kept deliberately strange.
